Markos V. Koutras serves as a Professor of Statistics and Applied Probability in the Department of Statistics & Insurance Science at the University of Piraeus (2000-present). He received a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a MSc Diploma in Computer Science and Operations Research from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1979 and 1981 respectively. He also received his PhD in Statistics from the same university in 1983.
His academic career started in 1986 as a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Among others, Markos Koutras has also served as a visiting Researcher at the University of Manitoba (Canada), University of London (UK), University of Southern California (USA) and McMaster University (Canada).
Markos Koutras is an elected member of the European Regional Committee of Bernoulli Society (2012-). He is currently the Editor-in-Chief in Methodology in Computing and Applied Probability journal, while he serves as Associate Editor in 9 highly-respected journals, such as the Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics and Communication in Statistics: Theory and Methods. His research interests include Asymptotic Theory, Combinatorics, Multivariate Analysis, Reliability Theory, Statistical Process Control, Theory of Runs and Scans, Financial Risk Modeling.
Markos Koutras has served as Vice-Rector of Finance, Planning and Development at the University of Piraeus (2017-22) and as Dean at School of Finance and Statistics in the same university (2013-17). He has also been the Head of the Department of Statistics & Insurance Science (2003-07, 2011-13) and the Director of the MSc Program in Applied Statistics (2001-04, 2007-11, 2022-25). Markos Koutras has also been the co-chair of more than 15 international scientific conferences, such as the International Workshop in Applied Probability and the European Meeting of Statisticians. He has published more than 100 articles in scientific journals and 25 contributed chapters in edited volumes.
He has co-authored 14 teaching textbooks in Greek and 7 scientific volumes or books in English. Several PhD. theses and MSc. theses have been already successfully completed under his supervision. His research work and achievements in numbers are summarized below.
